9 displaced after early morning apartment fire

The American Red Cross said nine people are displaced after an early morning apartment fire at the Avesta Solano apartment complex in the 8800 block of I-35 North Monday, April 1.

The Austin Fire Department said initially between 40-50 people were evacuated at the start of the fire. Investigators said the flames caused heavy damage to building 3.

Jamie Rojas lived in one of the damaged units. She was able to get her family and dog out before the fire spread.

“I looked around I was like where's my dog," Rojas said. "My dog was inside the apartment so we ran inside and she was under the bed. She was really scared and thought we had forgotten her."

Austin-Travis County EMS said three adults and two children were sent to the hospital with smoke inhalation and some burns.

A pregnant woman was also transported, according to AFD. Officials said the cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking material and it was accidental. AFD also said residents did not report hearing a smoke alarm go off.
