Two children killed in car accident in Cedar Park

Two children are dead and one woman is in critical condition after a crash in Cedar Park at the intersection of Walton Way and West Whitestone Boulevard.

The metal frames of the two vehicles involved sat twisted and broken in front of a strip mall Wednesday afternoon. “Officers arrived on scene and located two vehicles to have been involved in the crash. The first was a red SUV and the second was a black pickup truck,” said Lt. Bobby Vernengo with the Cedar Park Police Department.

According to officers with the police department, plenty of witnesses saw the deadly crash that shut down Westbound Whitestone Boulevard for several hours.

Two children, who were passengers in the red SUV, were pronounced dead on scene.

“I do know that witnesses on scene pulled one of the juveniles out, so at least one of them was buckled in. I don't know about the second one,” Vernengo said.

The woman driving that car was taken to St. David's Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

“Witnesses that were on scene, and officers, as well as first responders, are heavily affected by this and it is not something that is seen in Cedar Park very often at all,” said Vernengo.

A female passenger in the black pickup truck was treated on scene, but police say she didn't suffer any major injuries. The male driver of that truck was the only one completely unharmed. “Any type of crash involving a fatality is tragic, especially when it involves young children,” Vernengo said.

Investigators spent Wednesday mapping out the crash scene while police diverted traffic around the area. Officers said evidence and witness statements will be used to figure out what led to the collision. West Whitestone Boulevard fully reopened around 8 p.m.
