Details emerge about church shooter

Investigators said Devin Patrick Kelley of New Braunfels is the man who murdered 26-people - in a Sutherland Springs Church Sunday morning and, they believe it stemmed from a "domestic situation."

Monday morning FBI agents walked the First Baptist Church property with metal detectors.

The front of the church was blocked from view with a temporary wall only the steeple and an American flag hanging in sadness could be seen from the road.

On Sunday morning, investigators said 26-year-old Devin Kelley, dressed in ballistic armor and armed with an assault rifle made his way into the house of worship.

"He was wearing a black mask that had a white face skull to it then he drove across to the church and that's when he exited the vehicle and started shooting," said DPS Regional Director Freeman Martin.

Nearly all of those inside were either injured or killed. the youngest of the victims was 18 months old and the eldest 77.

Terrie Smith worked at the gas station nearby and walked across the road when they heard the shooting.

"And then all of a sudden the rounds just started going and then when I looked that way all you could see was the gentlemen shooting like this and all I could remember is seeing the gun like this," said Smith.

Investigators revealed the horror was captured on video.

"There was a length of time that suspects been inside the church during the shooting event. He moved around freely inside the church.”

When back outside a neighbor, armed with his own assault rifle shot Kelley, wounding him. He then stopped a driver and they both gave chase. It ended when Kelley wrecked out 10 miles north of the scene, he was found with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"We know during that pursuit the suspect used his cell phone to notify his father that he had been shot and didn't think he was going to make it. Subsequently he shot himself,"  said Martin.

The why was finally answered when investigators said it involved a domestic situation when Kelley expressed anger towards his mother-in-law.

"The suspects mother-in-law attended this church. We know that he had made threats. She had received threatening texts from him,"  said Martin.

According to investigators Kelley had two other guns inside his SUV, it is unknown if he had any other intentions.

Investigators praised the quote "Texas Heroes" who stopped the world from ever finding out.

"As in all active shooter situations the goal with law enforcement is to neutralize the shooter. In this situation we had two good samaritans who did that for law enforcement,"  said Martin.

Kelley owned four guns which he purchased in 2014, 15,16 and 17.

He did not have a license to carry and was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.

Typically, that is a disqualifier from being able to purchase firearms. officials are looking into that.
