Immigration activists say the fight against sanctuary city law is not over

Immigration activists rallied in front of city hall Wednesday evening after the federal appeals court’s ruling to uphold Senate Bill 4.

Dreamers and children of dreamers one by one shared their fears of being removed from the country they call home. SB4 allows local law enforcement officers to question the immigration status of people they arrest.

The Texas Civil Rights Project has worked with local immigrants on litigation and are strongly against SB4. Zene Perez with TCRP said the legislation is detrimental to the immigration community in Texas.

“Which basically extends racial profiling and discriminatory powers of Texas police and basically breaks the constitution in several ways," Perez said. “We are going to continue to litigate in the court and we are here to basically make the stand that regardless of what happens in the court we are going to be fighting out here and in the courtroom, the fight's not over."

The Texas Civil Rights Project is re-strategizing considering taking this case to the full circuit court or to the Supreme Court.
