John H. Reagan Early College High School to be renamed Northeast Early College High School
John H. Reagan Early College High School will be renamed to Northeast Early College High School after the Austin Independent School District Board approved the name change in a vote on Monday (2/25) night.
AISD says the name change will go into effect for the 2019-2020 school year.
This is the fourth school within the district to be renamed out of six being considered.
Reagan now joines Lee Elementary, the Anita Ferrales Coy Facility and Sarah Beth Lively Middle Schol on the list of campuses that are being renamed.
For more than year now the district has continued to tackle the names of schools named after individuals who were associated with, or were part of the Confederate Army.
Eastside Memorial requested an extension last April because it's in the process of updating the school.
Meantime AISD board members approved new sex education standards for 3rd through 8th grades.
3rd graders will learn about adolescent development while fifth graders will learn about sexually transmitted diseases and get guidance on healthy relationships. Other changes include lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Sex ed classes are not mandatory for students. According to AISD's website, teachers should send home a form that allows parents to opt out of the classes before they happen.
