A San Marcos police officer is in recovery after being struck by a suspected drunk driver on I-35 near the McCarty overpass Saturday night.

Officer Claudia Cormier is in stable condition but sedated according to San Marcos PD. She went into immediate surgery and her condition may change pending additional surgeries.

Cormier has worked for the department for three years.

She was attending a traffic hazard call on I-35 around 9:45 p.m. when she was struck by a person driving a 2000 Ford Expedition.

San Marcos PD dispatch received a number of 911 calls shortly after saying an officer was hit.

When first responders arrived, they found Cormier with severe life-threatening injuries and rushed her to Seton-Hays Hospital in Kyle where she underwent emergency surgery.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers assisted in the investigation and arrested the driver of the Ford Expedition, 58-year-old Neil Sheehan of Flower Mound.

Sheehan has been charged with intoxication assault on a public servant, a second-degree felony, and failure to slow causing serious bodily injury. He was transported and booked into the Hays County Jail.

The crash is being investigated by the San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team and the Texas DPS State Crash Team.

A warrant has been obtained for a toxicology report.
