Trump backs Senator Ted Cruz in race calls Beto O’Rourke, “disaster for Texas”
The race for the U.S Senate in Texas is heating up between candidates: Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Beto O’ Rourke.
President Donald Trump tweeted Friday that he was coming to the aid of an old rival.
The president tweeted Friday I will be doing a major rally for senator Ted Cruz in October. “I'm picking the biggest stadium in Texas we can find. As you know, Ted has my complete and total endorsement. His opponent is a disaster for Texas - weak on second amendment, crime, borders, military, and vets!"
Dr. Brian Smith, Professor of Political Science said Trump's endorsement has provided an interesting change of events since the two were at odds in 2016. "If Donald Trump comes to endorse your candidate it's going to motivate the republicans it's going to motivate your base and then your candidate is going to get a bump from that," Smith said. "Cruz got his revenge at the republican convention when he refused to endorse Donald Trump so we're are looking at people who are having a real history of being political enemies but times do change and they realize they really do need each other."
Cruz continues to lead in the polls but only by one point.an e-roll by Emerson College shows Cruz at 38-percent and O’Rourke at 37-percent. This after O’Rourke received national attention for his response to a question about pro-athletes protesting during the national anthem.
Travis county GOP Executive Director Gary Teal national attention won't matter when it comes time to vote. "He has to win or lose inside the borders of Texas, yes he's the flavor of the month nationally he's a bright young man member of a punk band he's a cool guy but Texans will decide based on who they want representing them in Washington," Teal said. "There's no way that Cruz or his supporters are going to take a nap and let the tortoise out run the hare this is not a close race there is not a blue wave coming from inside Texas that's going to put Beto O’Rourke in the Senate."
The election is 10 weeks from this Tuesday.
