Westlake girls golf team repeats as state champs

The Westlake High School girls golf team are once again state champs!

New Westlake coach Ashley Patterson led the Chaparrals to their second straight title at the UIL 6A Girls State Tournament.

Indiviual performances that helped lead the team to victory include Notre Dame bound senior Madelyn Jones finishing 10th overall and junior Bentley Cotton, a future Baylor Bear, firing a second round 70 and finishing 8th.

Stanford bound junior Sadie Englemann finished tied for second individually at three under par.

Westlake took the title over runner up Plano West by finishing 20 strokes better for what some would call an easy win. Not Coach Patterson though.

"(Laughing) I wouldn't use the word easy, I'd use the word blessed. This year has been unlike any I could of ever imagined. Coach Knowlan has set up an incredible program at Westlake and I was very honored to be able to take over and still be able to work with him and these young ladies are unbelievable," Patterson says.

Players, like Englemann, say they're ecstatic about the win.

"That's the goal, of course of high school golf, is to win the State Championship and doing it two years is incredible.  I'm so freaking proud of this team, it's insane, we worked so hard and just to see everyone together on the last green celebrating, it's unreal," Englemann says.
