1 rescued, 1 arrested in San Marcos hostage situation

San Marcos police said one person was rescued and another was arrested after a hostage situation early Thursday morning.

What happened?

The backstory:

Police said on Thursday, Jan. 30, just before 2 a.m., officers breached an apartment complex off Aquarena Springs Drive near I-35.

Some of the surrounding apartments were evacuated before the rescue.

San Marcos Police Chief Stan Standridge spoke about the actions taken by members of the SWAT team.

"Departments will frequently use an explosive breach because it will knock over the door and provide the necessary distraction while the SWAT team can then mitigate any threat inside. In this case, it was a failed breach because it was a metal door, so they went to the alternate breach points, which were the windows, and that was executed within seconds. We had guns and eyes within that apartment within 30 seconds of the initial breach which led to the successful rescue of that woman," Standridge said.

35-year-old Hector Cuestas

Standridge said the victim wasn't seriously hurt and was treated on scene.

The suspect, 35-year-old Hector Cuestas, was booked into the Hays County Jail. He is charged with family violence and interfering with a public servant.

His bond is set at $10,000.
