15-foot sinkhole at East Austin caused by disconnected storm drainage pipe

Officials with the Watershed Protection Department for the City of Austin say a contractor left a storm drainage pipe disconnected, which caused a 15-foot sinkhole to appear in East Austin on Saturday.

The sinkhole was discovered around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Town Creek Drive and South Lakeshore Blvd.

The contractor is associated with a private developer, according to the city.

City officials believe the water from Saturday's rainfall couldn't flow through the storm drain system, causing the roadway to wash out.

The damaged roadway was closed.

The private contractor was able to make temporary repairs to reopen the street. The contractor told the city they would begin the permanent repairs on Monday.
