2 deadly crashes on Austin roadways in one weekend, multiple people injured
As of October 20th there have been 66 traffic deaths on Austin roadways. At the exact same time last year, there were 57. The increase is cause for concern, Austin Police are asking drivers to be safe behind the wheel.
AUSTIN, Texas - It was a dangerous weekend on Austin roadways.
Saturday night, emergency crews responded to reports of a person pinned in a car possibly on fire on FM 969. Six children were taken to the hospital and three adults were declared trauma alerts. The children are expected to survive with non-life threatening injuries.
Leading into early Sunday morning, Austin Travis County EMS responded to yet another crash on north FM 620 near Comanche Trail. A man was pronounced dead on scene and two people were taken to Round Rock Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Hours later emergency crews were on the scene of a fatal crash on Burnet Road and Braker Lane. Initial reports state that the car was flipped over on its roof and two people were pinned inside. A woman in her 20’s died on scene and a man in his 40’s was taken to the hospital with critical life-threatening injuries.
"According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling southbound on Burnet Road at a possible high rate of speed and left the roadway for an unknown reason, rolled mid-air multiple times and impacted on the side of the roadway," said APD Corporal Judson Brooks. “We’d like to remind the public to stay leery of the roadway be cognoscente of everything around you and operate within the law."
Austin Police say it's too soon to confirm speed as a factor in the crash. According to Vision Zero ATX, a safety initiative by the community, the city of Austin and the Austin Police Department there are four common factors that lead to car crashes:
• Failure to yield
• Distraction
• Speeding
• Intoxication
