Fire crews responding to 29-acre grass fire in East Austin
EAST TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas - Crews are battling a fire at FM 969 and FM 973.
As of about 9:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, the Texas A&M Forest Service says the fire is about 95 percent contained with no more forward progression.
The Austin Fire Department says it's burned about 29 acres.
AFD will have three apparatus patrolling the fire until around 2 a.m.
The Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) says containment means there's a good control line around the fire, and there are no hot spots, burning vegetation, or flames that may cross the line.
TAMFS will return in the morning to continue mop-up.
"There are multiple structures that are threatened. We're going to try to protect those structures as best we can," Kimberly Kaschalk with the Texas A&M Forest Service said.
When a structure is threatened, it means there's potential for fire to move in that direction, but not necessarily in immediate danger.
Helicopters have dumped water over the area.
"We're using the aircraft, and we're going to do our best to ring this thing in and get it stopped," Kaschalk said.
Avoid the area but drive carefully if you have to be on the road.
"We have a lot of traffic, a lot of equipment, we have at least two dozers, we have some very large fire apparatus, we have people on the ground, it's going to be a very dangerous situation," Kaschalk said.
The cause isn't known at this time. No evacuations have been ordered.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
