San Marcos Chief of Police Chase Stapp issued the following press release...

On Saturday, June 6, at approximately 9:00 PM, officers were dispatched to the parking lot of HEB at 641 E. Hopkins Street for a complaint about multiple dogs which were believed to be dying in the back of a U-Haul type moving truck. On arrival, officers observed a total of 8 dogs, 2 of which were deceased, 2 of which were in serious distress and later died, and 4 of which appeared to be in distress but stable. Officers learned that Karen and Bruce Knutson had transported the dogs in the cargo area of a moving truck from The Woodlands, TX to San Marcos and that the heat and lack of ventilation in the vehicle is what caused the injury and ultimately the death of 4 of the 8 animals. Both Karen and Bruce Knutson were arrested and charged with 8 counts of Cruelty to Animals. Four of those charges are State Jail Felonies while the other four are Class A Misdemeanors. Both Knutsons have been released after posting bond and await court proceedings.
