AISD: Lunch will be prepared, distributed at 14 campuses during closures

Austin Independent School District says that lunch will be prepared and distributed for children under the age of 19 at 14 campuses during closures. Curbside lunch meals will be provided for each child in the car. 

The news comes after AISD canceled classes for Friday, March 13 just hours after city and county leaders confirmed the first cases of coronavirus in the Austin-Travis County area.

 AISD says in a Facebook post that it's offering the meals as part of its commitment to serve high-quality food to its families.

The campuses where the meals will be prepared and distributed are:

  • Dobie Middle School
  • Cook Elementary School
  • Burnet Middle School
  • LBJ Early College High School
  • Govalle Elementary
  • T.A. Brown Elementary School
  • Eastside Memorial Early College High School
  • Dawson Elementary School
  • Linder Elementary School
  • Crockett Early College High School
  • Pleasant Hill Elementary School
  • Houston Elementary School
  • Akins Early College High School
  • Perez Elementary School

According to AISD, the sites were chosen based on 50 percent or more students receiving meal benefits.

The curbside meal sites will be open from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday starting on March 23 if school closures continue. Children must be present to receive a meal and meals are not available for adults.Families are advised to stay in their cars and not enter buildings during meal pick up.

The healthy meals served will include protein, grains, fruit, and vegetables. The option of milk and compostable cutlery will be available.

AISD is scheduled to being its Spring Break on Monday. Officials urge students, parents, and staff to remain vigilant in efforts to stay healthy.
