A motorist who did not ignore an Amber Alert Monday is being credited with helping rescue a missing child from San Antonio.
The 3-year-old child was found at the I-10 rest stop just west of Flatonia Monday night. He was secured by a Fayette Co. Sheriffs deputy and a local police officer.
"I would have never imagine it would have ended up in Fayette County," said Lt. David Beyer.
Cellphones across the state were activated by an Amber Alert for Josue Gonzalez. Beyer said he didn't ignore it even though it was issued miles away by the San Antonio PD.
"Oh always pay attention, you never know thats why these alerts are sent out, we've had to send them out before for our county," said Lt. Beyer.
At the Interstate Rest Stop a Motorist had also received the alert. He recognized the vehicle and called authorities.
"But at this time we had one heck of a citizen that we have to really commend because it really worked out right and saved a young person's life, based on the circumstances here," said Flatonia Police Chief Perry Kram.
The child was asleep in the car when it was stolen. Investigators say the vehicle was parked at a San Antonio business and the mother left the car running while she went in to pick up her boyfriend.
The moment Sanai Gonzales was told in San Antonio, that her son was found and he was safe was recorded by a Crew from FOX 7 San Antonio partner KSAT.
"I feel so happy that they found they already found the baby thank you for all the officers for all the hard work," said Gonzalez.
The good news was given to Gonzalez by SAPD Lt. Dave Barrigan.
"It was great police work great police work with all the agencies the units out here and also the county in La Grange officers got the vehicle with actor in custody and the child is safe," said Barrigan.
The man who allegedly took the car, with the child in the backseat, is identified as Victor Miguel Torres.
He is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. kidnapping charges are pending.
It was a capture, and a rescue along a major roadway --- all made possible by an Amber Alert that wasn't disregarded.
"Just don't ignore them , you never know when that one time, will save a little one's life, and this is one of those times," said Chief Kram.
