APD investigating homicide at Habitat Suites

Police officers says one person was killed in a shootout at Habitat Suites on East Highland Mall Boulevard,

The Austin Police Department has identified the 24-year-old who was killed in a shootout in North Austin. Kalvin Anderson, 24, succumbed to his injuries around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 29. 

The suspects were only identified as black males.  

According to police, dispatch started to receive calls about shots fired around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 29. Officers were dispatched to the Habitat Suites at 500 East Highland Mall Boulevard but no victims were located.

Austin 911 then received a call from Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas advising that a black male with a gunshot wound had been transported by friends from the scene to the hospital, according to a press release from APD. Despite life-saving measures performed by hospital personnel, Kalvin Anderson succumbed to his injuries.

After speaking to multiple witnesses, detectives with APD learned that a verbal confrontation erupted between two groups that were staying at the motel. The verbal confrontation escalated into a physical fight that ended in the discharge of multiple weapons.

Two women suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Both were treated at local hospitals and released.

APD also noted in their press release that several vehicles in the parking lot were damaged by gunfire. At least four vehicles were towed to APD's forensic facility for processing.

The Austin Police Department advises that those vehicle owners who could not be reached to authorize the processing of their vehicle at the scene should contact the Homicide Unit to check on the status of the vehicle.
