APD: Man hits patrol car from behind at red light in North Austin, flees on foot

Austin police say a man hit a patrol car stopped at a red light, then fled the scene on foot.

Tomas Avila Montes, 25, has been charged with third-degree felony failure to stop and render aid.

According to an arrest affidavit, two APD officers in their patrol cars were stopped at a red light at West Rundberg Lane and North Lamar Boulevard on Feb. 9 at around 2:16 p.m. Avila failed to stop for the light in time and rear-ended one of the patrol cars.

The officer stepped out of the car and Avila stepped out of his vehicle and began running through a parking lot, says the affidavit. The officers pursued on foot, one yelling "Stop, police!"

Avila did not stop and ran between two buildings and into a parking lot where he attempted to hide under one of the vehicles parked there, says the affidavit. Avila was then taken into custody.

The officer hit reported back pain from the crash.

Bond has been set at $10,000.
