APD to provide "no questions asked" gun surrender service

The Austin Police Department will be providing a "no questions asked" gun surrender service to residents in Travis County.

Austin citizens will have the ability to safely surrender any unwanted firearms and ammunition to police at quarterly events throughout the year. If you are unable to make one of the events, you can call 311 and request a police officer to be sent to your location to retrieve the unwanted firearms and ammunition.

The 311 service is available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

The first gun surrender service will be on Tuesday, January 28 between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m and will take place at the Robert Martinez Central East Substation, at 812 Springdale Road.

Instructions for surrendering guns and rifles:

  • Do not walk into the event with a visible gun or visible ammunition
  • Unload the gun
  • Put the gun and ammunition into separate bags
  • Leave the gun or ammunition in the trunk or backseat of the car
  • Leave the gun in the bag if you arrive on foot
  • Tell an officer you are there to turn a gun in and they will safely retrieve it

The Austin Police Department has planned five events for the program so far.
