AUSTIN, Texas - Apple says the start of construction on its new campus has begun as the company continues its broad expansion in Austin.
CEO Tim Cook made the announcement on social media before President Trump's visit to the company's facility where the new Mac Pro is being manufactured.
The new $1 billion campus is about a mile away from the manufacturing facility and will be about three million square feet.
The new campus will initially house 5,000 employees with a capacity to grow to 15,000.
It's expected to open in 2022.
Apple currently has about 7,000 employeees in Austin which it says is a 50% increase in the past five years.
