Austin celebrates Veterans Day with parade, ceremonies

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

Throughout our history, military service members have put on their uniforms to protect the values and liberties that this nation was built on. But that doesn’t stop once the uniform comes off and their time in active duty has ended. Veterans take the lessons they have learned and the experiences they’ve gained and continue their service to our nation by strengthening our communities.

Today, the Austin Veterans Day Parade Foundation will be honoring the men and women who have worn their uniforms and who continue to serve our country. The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. at the Congress Avenue Bridge and travels up to the Texas State Capitol Building. Viewing is available all along Congress Avenue and there will be a reviewing stand at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel at Congress and 7th Street.

The commemoration program will be held at 11 a.m. on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol.
