AUSTIN, Texas - As some in the community push for police reform, the Austin City Council is set to take action.
Council members are voting on a handful of items that could bring changes to the Austin Police Department. Council began meeting at just after 10 a.m. and went into recess at about 12:30 p.m. It restarted at around 1:30 p.m. and FOX 7 Austin will be streaming the meeting online and on our Facebook page.
More than 100 people are already signed up to speak at today's meeting to express their concerns on racial injustice in the city and push leaders to defund APD.

Austin City Council meeting discussing police reform resolutions
Council members discussed agenda items and listened to speakers from about 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 11, 2020.
The police budget is just one of the items aimed at reforming APD that council members will be looking at which also includes looking at banning chokeholds, bean bags, and other forms of less-lethal force.
The Austin Justice Coalition wants the city council to reduce the police department's budget by $100 million.

Some council members have also asked Austin Police Chief Brian Manley to resign.

Garza says Chief Manley needs to resign in order to help the community move forward and change.
Regardless of which way the city goes, all sides say they agree that the common goal is to make sure that all are treated fairly and given due process.
