Austin PD investigating potential homicide
David Lewis from Austin Police gives an update on a potential homicide early Saturday morning. Police say a man was found with obvious signs of trauma before 5 a.m.
AUSTIN - Austin police said a welfare call Saturday morning in North Austin quickly escalated into a murder investigation.
What we know:
Officers were called to the 12600 block of N. Lamar Boulevard around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday for a welfare check.
911 callers told dispatchers a man was on the ground at the location.
Austin police say officers found the man with signs of "obvious trauma."
Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at 4:54 a.m.
The public is being asked to avoid the area because it is an active crime scene. Officers are looking for video and other information that could assist in the investigation.
The incident is being investigated as Austin's 14th homicide of 2025, but police believe it is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
What they're saying:
When Sonny Le arrived to open Sky Nails and Spa Saturday morning, he was not expecting to see police tape and investigators crawling around near an apartment complex across the street.
"When I came to work, I saw a lot of police and, you know, the medical examiner and the corner around-blocking the traffic," said Le.
By Saturday afternoon, police had cleared out, but the early morning police lights still shocked Le.
"It didn't ever happen before," said Le. I've been here for like ten years, eleven years now. This is my first time seeing this. Then again, it's bad around here now. It didn't use to be"
What we don't know:
Police have not identified a suspect or the victim, but they're hoping nearby residents might be able to help.
"As of right now, investigators are currently interviewing witnesses, they're canvassing the crime scene, they're looking at footage to try to associate this with some type of suspect," said David Lewis.
Police did not release any information about what kind of injuries the victim sustained.
