AFD firefighters injured battling fire

A large brush fire in East Austin has been extinguished, the Austin Fire Department said.

According to AFD, at 12:41 p.m., there was a call for service about a fire in the 9500 block of FM 969 Road. It was reported the fire was at a quarter of an acre and spreading rapidly.

Brush fire in East Austin

Austin Fire Department shared video of a brush fire in East Austin that's rapidly spreading and threatening homes and schools.

AFD says crews worked to adapt and alter firefighting tactics as the wind shifted.

Around 4:37 p.m., AFD said the fire was extinguished. It burned 55 acres. The fire was contained to City of Austin park property.

Two firefighters were injured fighting the fire. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

The cause of the fire was due to equipment malfunction, AFD said.

Over 100 firefighters were on the scene fighting this fire, and several agencies assisted the Austin Fire Department.
