BURNET, Texas - Burnet High School was placed on lockout due to a report of a gun brought to school.
Burnet Consolidated ISD said in a release the District had received an anonymous report Friday morning that a gun was brought to Burnet High School by a student. The school activated lockdown procedures with students remaining in class and the campus closing to all visitors
BCISD says that out of an abundance of caution, other campuses briefly activated lockout procedures, which involved students remaining inside the building but otherwise resuming their day. However, those lockouts were lifted once the Burnet Police Department confirmed no threat beyond the possible weapon at BHS.
BPD and school administration searched all classrooms and student bags, both visually and by using metal-detecting wands. Additionally, all lockers on campus were opened and searched. The District provided updates to parents on the progress of the search. When no evidence of a gun was found, the lockdown was lifted shortly after 1 p.m.
Parents were encouraged to allow students to complete the school day. However, alternate early check-out procedures ensured parents wishing to pick up early could be reunited with students in a safe and orderly fashion.
"I want to commend the outstanding partnership between Burnet CISD and the Burnet Police Department," said Superintendent Keith McBurnett. "We are proud to provide a School Resource Officer on every campus as part of our comprehensive safety and security plan. Our preparation and coordinated efforts ensure that students are safe and that we are able to fully respond to reported threats immediately."
