For the Cedar Park High School football team and band 2015 was a year that will never be forgotten. In fact it was a year that will go down in history. For the first time in UIL history, both the football team and band won state championships in the same year.
To honor of that accomplishment the city of Cedar Park held a Texas-sized celebration.
"Can anyone here define what the word unprecedented means?" Matt Powell, mayor of Cedar Park, said, "If you look in the dictionary right now it says 'something that's never been done before, see for example: Cedar Park football and Cedar P ark band," Powell said.
"I can say for sure, without a doubt we have the best 5A football team in Texas." John Sloan, Cedar Park principal, said, "And we have the best 5A band in Texas."
The celebration was so big it carried over into 2016 and it took first year head football coach Carl Abseck by surprise.
"Just wow is all I can say just looking out here and seeing all these people and all of the people that lined the street what an unbelievable response to come out and celebrate with us as a community and I can't thank you enough for that. It is unbelievable," Abseck said.
An unbelievable honor the student athletes and community will carry on with them for the rest of their lives.
"We really appreciate what the community has done for us and we just love all of the support that you guys have given us and we are really happy to be at this point to create history with the football team," a member of the band said.
"We had a great group of players and a great community behind us and that helped support us and helped us become the best teams in Cedar Park history," Augustine Tambe, a senior linebacker, said.
This is the Cedar Park football team's second state championship in four years and the band's third state title, its first since 2011.
