Census Bureau finds Georgetown is nation's fastest growing city

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The U.S. Census Bureau finds that Georgetown is the nation's fastest growing city with a population of 50,000 or more. It saw its population rise nearly eight percent between July 1, 2014 and July 1, 2015. In fact, five of the nation's 11 fastest growing cities are in Texas.

Georgetown's increase helped the Austin-Round Rock metro area cross the two million population threshold in 2015.  Pflugerville, which is the nation's 11th fastest growing city, also contributed to the growth.

Besides Georgetown and Pflugerville, New Braunfels, Frisco and Pearland also were in the top 11.

As for Austin, it is now the 11th most populous city with an estimated population of 931,830. Houston ranks fourth, San Antonio ranks seventh and Dallas ranks ninth. New York City remains the most populous city by a large margin (8,550,405) compared to second place Los Angeles (3,971,883).

Austin also added just a little more than 19,000 people between July 1, 2014 and July 1, 2015. That increase ranked eighth. Houston came in second (adding around 40,000) and Dallas was just ahead of Austin in seventh (adding around 19,500). San Antonio was fourth and Forth Worth was sixth.

New York City added the most to its population with an increase of about 55,000.

Other highlights concerning Texas cities:

- San Angelo was one of seven cities that crossed the 100,000 population threshold between 2014 and 2015.

-Galveston was one of seven cities that crossed the 50,000 population threshold between 2014 and 2015.

-Arlington rejoined the list of the 50 most populous cities with Cleveland dropping off the list.
