Central Texas Food Bank hosts drive-thru distribution event at Del Valle High School
The Central Texas Food Bank prepared more than 1,500 emergency meal boxes.
DEL VALLE, Texas - Hundreds of cars lined up in the Monday fog that settled in Del Valle. Lines started at the Del Valle High School football stadium and stretched out to SH 71. Each driver patiently waited on an emergency food box distributed by the Central Texas Food Bank.
The nonprofit’s CEO said in a past interview they’ve seen an overwhelming increase in meals, in some areas 30 percent, in others more than 200 percent. Demand is high but supply is low, and the Central Texas Food Bank adjusted its business model to serve as many people as they can. Utilizing fewer volunteers, the nonprofit now distributes boxes at mobile sites across Central Texas.

Maria Herrera arrived early to grab a box to take home to her two sons. She, fortunately, has been able to keep her job in the pandemic but has struggled to make ends meet.
“It’s really difficult because I am a single mom, I have no family in this country so I don’t receive any help,” Herrera said.
Each box is 28 pounds filled with shelf-stable items like peanut butter, rice, tuna and hygiene kits, one for each household. Edith Salino Sanchez lost her job due to the health crisis. One box she says can help her family for a week.
“This is a great help for us and for everyone who is here,” Sanchez said.

Central Texas Food Bank distributing food for those in need
The organization is helping people keep food on the table with another drive-thru distribution event. FOX 7 Austin's Jane Lonsdale has details from Del Valle High School.
1,608 households in total received an emergency box, the largest amount distributed in one site so far. By noon all the emergency boxes were gone. Those still in line who didn’t receive one were given a priority card for the next event.
Mary Swanson came to pick up some meals for her co-workers pleased to see Texans helping Texans.

“I’m glad to see there’s a large turn out because we are all struggling and we are all in this together,” Swanson said.
