Winter weather: Snow falls in Central Texas

Due to the freezing and sub-freezing temperatures, some Central Texas school districts, colleges and universities have chosen to close or delay school.

Temperatures are expected to stay very cold through Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 17). A Hard Freeze Warning has also been issued for 6 p.m. Jan. 14 through 10 a.m. Jan. 17.

Below is a list of school districts, private and charter schools, and colleges and universities that have announced closures or delays due to weather on Wednesday, Jan. 17. This list will be updated periodically.

School Districts

Austin ISD

Because of expected weather, Austin ISD is delaying the start time for all classes, buses and offices by two hours again on Wednesday Jan. 17.

All after-school/outdoor activities will be brought indoors according to our temperature guidelines.

A two-hour delay adds two hours to your school’s start time and to the start time of all bus routes. All tardies and absences related to weather and traffic delays will be excused.

Families with questions about transportation may call AISD's Transportation Department between 7:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. at 512-414-0238.

Caldwell ISD

All Caldwell ISD campuses will operate on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Del Valle ISD

Due to the below-freezing temperatures predicted in the early morning, all Del Valle ISD schools and offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, January 17. All buses will pick students up two hours later than normal.

Please note that temperatures will be colder than normal and students should layer clothing and wear protective coverings on heads, necks, and hands to avoid skin exposure. District staff have verified that all campuses have operational heat and are at standard indoor temperatures. However, layered clothing will allow students to adjust if indoor temperatures fluctuate. 

Dime Box ISD

Dime Box ISD will have a two-hour delayed start on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Buses will be two hours later than normal. Classes will start two hours late.

Gonzales ISD

A Wind Chill Advisory and Hard Freeze Warning will remain in effect until tomorrow morning. As a result, Gonzales ISD will start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17. All buses will run two hours later than normal.

Snook ISD

Snook ISD will have a delayed start on Wednesday Jan. 17 to allow for safe travel of staff and students to school. School start time is 10 a.m.

Texas School for the Deaf

TSD will have a two-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and will open at 10 a.m.

Private and Charter Schools

Harmony Public Schools

Harmony Public Schools-Central Texas will operate on a two-hour delay for all Austin-area campuses & offices for Wednesday, Jan. 17.

  • IDEA Parmer Park – 2 Hour Delayed Start
  • IDEA Health Professions – 2 Hour Delayed Start

  • IDEA Round Rock Tech – NORMAL Operation

KIPP Texas - Austin

Due to weather conditions, all KIPP Texas- Austin schools will delay the start of the school day on Wednesday, Jan. 17, by two hours.
