City approves $3.25 million settlement for David Joseph family

Austin City Council approved a $3.25 million settlement for David Joseph's family, the largest sum in the history of the city.

On February 8, 2016 former Police Officer Geoffrey Freeman was called out to reports of a man chasing another man on the 800 block of East Yager.

Investigators say 17-year-old David Joseph was naked and unarmed. He reportedly refused an order to stop and charged at the officer. Freeman then fired and fatally shot him.

The following month Freeman was fired from the Austin Police Department after an investigation determined his use of force wasn't justified.

In December 2016 the city reached a settlement with Freeman. A Travis County Grand Jury decided not to indict him for Joseph's death following the release of dash camera video and drugs found in Joseph's system.
