AUSTIN, Texas - More financial help is on the way for the remaining homeowners in the Southeast Austin neighborhood heavily damaged during the 2013 Halloween flood.
On Tuesday the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved a $21.4 million dollar grant.
The focus area is along Onion Creek between South Pleasant Valley Road and East William Cannon Drive.
The buyout project began in 1999 and first included 483 homes. Since the Halloween flood of 2013, 103 homes have been purchased and 78 of them have been demolished.
59 homes remain to be purchased.
The city website states the purpose of the project is to protect current residents, potential future residents, visitors and first responders from the dangers of flooding.
Once all of the homes are gone there will be 190 acres of green space and an additional 100 acres for recreation.
