FRISCO, Texas - A few hundred students at on Frisco high school gathered Tuesday morning to pray for two classmates who died in a traffic accident over the weekend.
Sisters Peyton and Hayden Weissman were killed by a hit-and-run driver who slammed into their family’s car Saturday night in the Central Texas city of Kyle, about 20 miles south of Austin.
Kyle police said the sisters were both wearing their seat belts but died at the scene. Three other people in their car were taken to the hospital.
Both 16-year-old Peyton and 18-year-old Hayden attended Wakeland High School.
A large group of students held an informal prayer vigil for the sisters on campus Tuesday before the start of classes. The Frisco Independent School District said counselors were also available on campus for their friends and teachers.
“It was horrible to hear. No matter if you were close with them or not, just knowing that classmates of yours passed away is a horrible feeling,” said Boone Collins, a senior at Wakeland High.
“I was honestly devastated, you know. You don’t think those things are going to happen and you can’t really control those things,” said Ashton Bryce, another Wakeland High classmate. “I was just completely heartbroken. Both of them were huge parts of a lot of people’s lives.”
Lawmakers in Austin also paused for a moment of silence on the Texas House floor Tuesday morning as a tribute to the sisters.
Police said 61-year-old Macario Hernandez was to blame for the deadly crash. Public records show he has two previous convictions for driving while intoxicated and is now charged with accident causing death and injury.
Friends said the Weissmans had family in San Antonio that they visited often.
The names and conditions of the other three victims have not been released.
