Auto-pedestrian crash on I-35

Southbound lanes on I-35 near the Cesar Chavez Street exit are shut down after a deadly crash.

The Austin Police Department is investigating a deadly auto-pedestrian crash on I-35.

APD says that a man was struck by two vehicles around 5:23 a.m. near Cesar Chavez Street, exit 234, and Riverside Drive, exit 233. 

The drivers of both vehicles remained on the scene and are cooperating with the investigation.

Southbound lanes in the area were shut down until about 8:30 a.m. Traffic was backed up to 51st Street and was diverted to the frontage road.

This crash is being investigated as Austin's 70th fatal crash of 2022, resulting in 71 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2021, there were 78 fatal crashes resulting in 84 deaths.
