Aaron Sparkman spent his Sunday getting a first hand look at his dream job.
"I plan to be a highway patrolman at some point in time. I'm actually applying in the 2017 (recruiting class)," he said.
It's an opportunity Aaron and hundreds of more families were provided during Texas DPS' annual Museum Day event. From tanks, to weapons, cars, and bikes DPS opened its doors with an eye to the future.
"We're hoping that some of these individuals that we see, whether they are 8 years old or 10 years old, we can recruit them for the future. This is giving them the ability to go through what some of our recruits go through and letting them see that, at the end of the day, we're people too and we want to go home to our families," Sgt. Robbie Barrera said.
For Aaron's father, Scott, it gave him a much clearer picture of his son's future profession.
"It's just interesting to see the approach they take to the work they do and to check out the training facilities and everything (Aaron's) has to go through and deal with in the day to day life of being a trooper. It's an interesting outlook and good perspective to see what's going on, " he said.
After spending a few hours with potential coworkers, Aaron now knows his dream job will be a reality soon.
"I believe, as my dad said it, it could be a potentially dangerous job and knowing the amount of training that they go through and the people that are training them are well qualified makes me a little less worried about the dangerous side of it, knowing that I'll be prepared and trained by professionals," Aaron said.
