AUSTIN, Texas - El Interior of Austin is closing its doors after more than 40 years in business.
The store, located in the Clarksville neighborhood west of downtown, features one of the largest and most diverse inventories of Mexican and Guatemalan folk art in Texas, curated personally by owner Marcia Lucas.
Lucas launched her business in 1979 as La Estrella, where she initially worked with designers, art galleries, and museums. In 1984, she opened El Interior in First City Center downtown, then moved the store to its current location following the bust of the late 80s.
According to a release from El Interior, Lucas is now ready to retire and is holding a storewide liquidation sale. All handmade women’s clothing, textiles, accessories, and furniture accent pieces must be sold by August 8th. This includes dresses, skirts, blouses, tops, shawls, jackets, scarves, handbags, wall decor, and folk art, as well as office furniture, display fixtures, and operating equipment.
As part of the sale, a number of prizes will be awarded. To participate, contestants must register in person at the store on W. Lynn Street during normal business hours. All prizes are on display, no purchase is necessary and the winners don't need to be present to win.
