Fans react to Cowboys taking a knee before national anthem

Controversy surrounding the national anthem carried throughout the weekend with hundreds of NFL players protesting Trump.

All eyes were on the Cowboys Monday night, to see what they would do. In the end, they decided to lock arms and take a knee in unity before the national anthem. While the rendition was being sung, they stood arm-in-arm along with the Cardinals.

Some people at Cover 3 sports bar in downtown Austin were happy with the decision the Cowboys made - even some cheers and clapping. Fans we spoke with say the Cowboys chose to find common ground. But, controversy began Friday following President Trump's comments at a campaign rally in Alabama.

He took a moment to slam athletes who kneel in protest during the national anthem, reigniting a prior debate. Some people thought the president was fueling racial divisions.

Throughout the weekend things escalated via Twitter. This resulted in multiple NFL teams and players deciding to take a stand during Sunday's games - by taking a knee or linking arms in solidarity against the president.

One fan at Cover 3 made a comment about the NFL in general.

"I think that they are the absolute best advocate for those communities of color that have suffered through some of these injustices. I think that what happened with the cowboys today is a really good example of a team saying 'Not us, not now...no Trump we're not going to continue down this line that you want us to go down,'" says Ramon Romero, Cowboys fan.

On the other hand, some boos were heard erupting from the crowd at the game while the Cowboys took a knee. Several people on social media are also calling it disrespectful.
