AUSTIN, Texas - New details were released about a flock of ducks that died from the bird flu in Northwest Austin.
The ducks were found at the Arboretum Shopping Center pond near the intersection of North Capital of Texas Highway and Research Blvd.
Texas Parks and Wildlife said the bird flu virus, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), appears to be circulating among wild birds visiting their winter grounds.

So far, other Texas counties have reported bird flu cases — Wharton, Galveston, El Paso, Potter and Harris counties.
Officials recommended people take down their bird feeders and bird baths at this time to discourage birds from congregating.
Additionally, game bird hunters should consider precautions such as:
- Disposing carcasses properly
- Wearing gloves when processing
- Avoiding consumption or processing of any sick bird
- Cleaning and disinfecting tools between carcasses
- Cooking meat to proper temperatures
As of now, the transmission risk from infected birds to people remains low, but the public should take basic protective measures.
If you have had contact with an HPAI-positive or suspect animal and develop signs of illness, immediately contact your healthcare provider and let them know about the exposure.
If you encounter a wild animal with signs consistent with HPAI, contact your local TPWD wildlife biologist.
