Who is the FSU shooter?

What we know:

The shooter has been identified as a 20-year-old student at FSU. He’s the son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy who has been with the sheriff’s office for more than 18 years.

"She has a tremendous job," Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil said. "Her service to this community has been exceptional. Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene. And we are continuing that investigation into how that weapon was used, and what other weapons perhaps he may have had access to."

The accused gunman was also a member of the Sheriff’s Office Youth Advisory Council, McNeil said.

What we don't know:

Police did not release a motive for the shooting.

What they're saying:

President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the FSU shooting Thursday afternoon.

"It’s a shame," he said at the White House.

FBI Director Kash Patel said FBI agents are on the ground in Jacksonville to assist.

"We will provide full support to local law enforcement as needed. Please keep the FSU community in your prayers," he said on X

"My heart breaks for the students, their families, and faculty at Florida State University. There is no place in American society for violence. Our entire nation is praying for the victims and their families," Homeland Security Director Kristi Noem said on X.

"Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said on X.

Parkland shooting survivors speak out

The shooting has also sparked strong reaction from survivors and family members of victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed on Feb. 14, 2018.

What they're saying:

Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting, said Thursday that he’s sadly not surprised by what unfolded at FSU.

"America is broken," he posted on X. "My daughter Jaime was murdered in the Parkland school shooting.  Many of her friends who were lucky enough to survive that shooting went on to attend FSU.  Incredibly, some of them were just a part of their 2nd school shooting and some were in the student union today.  As a father, all I ever wanted after the Parkland shooting was to help our children be safe.  Sadly, because of the many people who refuse to do the right things about reducing gun violence, I am not surprised by what happened today."

David Hogg, a Parkland survivor turned activist who now serves as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, responded to the FSU shooting on X

"It is absolutely horrific that this continues to happen time and time again as our politicians continue to only send their thoughts and prayers," he said. "We must do more to end this epidemic of gun violence."
