The Mayor of Houston is calling on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to open up the state's ten billion dollar rainy day fund to help pay for Hurricane Harvey damage. According to the mayor, the city has run out of funds and may be forced to raise property taxes to pay for the cleanup.
However, it is not as easy as the governor just opening up the fund and handing out cash.
In order to access the rainy day fund, Governor Greg Abbott would have to call a special session since lawmakers are not scheduled to return in Texas until 2019.
If called to a special session, lawmakers would then need to approve releasing money.
Only then could money from the rainy day fund be distributed to communities in need. Joining us now in the FOX 7 Austin studio to discuss this in greater detail is GOP consultant Edward Getterman and Rock Cofer, a leader in the Texas Democratic Party.
