Free COVID-19 testing for construction workers at Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Three hundred frontline construction workers in Austin will have the opportunity to get free COVID-19 tests this Saturday. The frontline workers will also receive financial assistance, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The testing site will be set up at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Reicher Drive from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. 

Financial Literacy Coalition of Central Texas (FLCCT), the U.S. Hispanic Contractor’s Association (USHCA), and the Austin Latino Coalition (ALC) are collaborating to host the free COVID-19 testing site. According to a press release, FLCCT will cover the costs of free PCR and Anti-body testing for three-hundred frontline construction industry workers identified by the USHCA.

In addition, the frontline workers will receive financial assistance, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including masks and supplies through additional partnerships with the Latino HealthCare Forum, Central Health, and CommUnityCare Health Centers.

The Austin Latino Coalition has advocated for the implementation of a bilingual, culturally sensitive, public health and prevention campaign to mitigate the disproportionate impacts and spread of COVID-19 in the Austin Latino community, according to the press release. During week seventeen of the pandemic, Latinos represent sixty-five percent (65%) of hospitalizations, sixty percent (60%) of COVID-19 cases, and thirty-nine percent (39%) of deaths.

Officials plan to speak about these figures in further detail during a press conference at the testing site. Austin mayor Steve Adler, Dr. Mark Escott, and others are expected to speak around 9:30 a.m.
