Iconic Austin Tex-Mex restaurant Trudy's closes last location
AUSTIN, Texas - After more than 40 years, Trudy's Tex-Mex has announced it is closing its only remaining brick-and-mortar restaurant on Burnet Road.
The restaurant announced on its social media and website that it was "time for us to say goodbye to our North Star location" but it did not specify an exact date when it would be closed.
What is Trudy's know for?
Trudy's was famous for its Mexican martinis.
The restaurant opened in 1977 and in 2020, Trudy's was purchased by a venture capital firm out of bankruptcy.
Trudy's had three locations when it was purchased in 2020, including a South Star location at Little Texas Lane and I-35. The South Star location closed in 2024.
A location near the University of Texas campus was also closed and there was also Trudy's Del Mar, which took over the South Congress Cafe, but that closed shortly after opening in 2021.
Why is Trudy's closing?
The restaurant did not give any specific reason for why it was closing.
Trudy's post thanked its team, customers, and the Austin community while saying that the "Trudy's Tex-Mex brand continues forward, committed to exploring new opportunities."

After over 40 wonderful years of serving the Austin community, it’s time for us to say goodbye to our North Star location on Burnet Road. Trudy’s TexMex has been more than just a restaurant— it’s been a place where memories were made, margaritas were shared, and Austin’s vibrant spirit came to life.
As we reflect on the incredible journey at North Star, we are filled with gratitude for our loyal guests, hardworking team members, and the city we’ve proudly called home. Trudy’s Tex-Mex has always been about bringing people together, and we are so proud of the joy and connection we’ve been able to foster at this location.
We would be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to acknowledge the incredible individuals who have been the heart and soul of Trudy’s North Star:
- Our Amazing Trudy’s Team, many of whom have worked with us for decades. They are the best in the business and have brought their passion and dedication to exceptional guest experiences every single day.
- Our Loyal Customers, who didn’t just dine with us but became part of our Trudy’s family. Your support and love for Trudy’s fueled us through the years, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
While the North Star chapter is coming to an end, the Trudy’s Tex-Mex brand continues forward, committed to exploring new opportunities to serve the Austin community.
Thank you, Austin, for your support and love. Here’s to the good times, the best tacos, and the greatest community we could ever hope for.
With love and gratitude,
The Trudy’s Team
