Illegal racing leads to one man's death in South Austin

An illegal race in South Austin has left one man dead. 

Just before midnight on Wednesday, January 15, ATCEMS responded to a crash at the 7500 block of Bluff Springs Road. Upon arrival, they found a man in his 20's badly injured and declared a trauma alert. He was transported to the St Davids South Austin Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the victim was involved in an illegal race that led to the accident that took his life

The victim and another man, 20-year-old Jorge Luis Lopez-Dominguez, were racing northbound on Bluff Springs Road just before the collision. 

The victim was driving his red infinity in the left-hand lane while Lopez-Dominguez was driving his Chevy pickup truck in the right-hand lane. 

After the victim got ahead of the truck, he attempted to make a wide turn and was hit by Lopez-Dominguez who was still traveling at a high rate of speed. 

The victim's car was launched into oncoming traffic. He later died of his wounds. Lopez-Dominguez fled the scene, but later came back after the investigation began. 

Lopez-Dominguez was charged with two felonies, failure to stop and render aid as well as racing. His total bond is set at $100,000. 

APD is continuing to investigate the case and anyone with information about the crash is being asked to call APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at 512-964-5576.
