CapMetro MetroAccess van rolls over in crash

A CapMetro MetroAccess van was involved in a crash in South Austin Wednesday morning.

A CapMetro MetroAccess van was involved in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in South Austin.

The crash happened near the intersection of S. 1st Street and W. William Cannon Drive.

When Austin fire crews arrived at the scene just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the van was on its side, pinching a smaller four-door sedan. There was also a third vehicle involved with damage to it, says AFD.

"It appears to be a T-Bone accident," Andy Ramon, fire specialist with AFD, said.

AFD on CapMetro van rollover crash

A CapMetro van was involved in a multi-vehicle crash in South Austin which caused it to rollover.

According to AFD, three people were transported to the hospital: two from the van and one from the sedan. Only two people were on the van at the time of the crash, including the driver.

ATCEMS reported on social media that one person with serious injuries and two with minor injuries were taken to St. David's South Austin Medical Center.

EMS also stated there was a fourth person involved who was being evaluated for minor injuries, but whether they were also hospitalized is currently unknown.

"They were all able to get out on their own power, we just had to open some doors for them through the rear, and they got out," Ramon said.

APD says none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

The vehicle involved in the crash is one of CapMetro's MetroAccess paratransit vans, which are used for transporting disabled and elderly passengers.

AFD says everyone involved is cooperating, and they remind drivers to be careful on the roads.

"This is one of our busier intersections, along with the Menchaca-Slaughter intersection as well," Ramon said. "Just know your surroundings. This area does get congested pretty often various times of the day."

CapMetro released a statement on the crash around 11:16 a.m., saying:

An incident involving a CapMetro vehicle occurred earlier this morning after 10:20 a.m. near William Canon [sic] and S. 1st Street. CapMetro is coordinating with the Austin Police Department (APD), Fire Department (AFD), and Austin-Travis County EMS, who responded to the incident. An investigation is still ongoing.
