International Walk to School Day

The Safe Kids Coalition and the City of Austin Safe Routes to School program are teaming up to walk with students at Summitt Elementary.

The International Walk to School Day happens this year on October 2.

The Safe Kids Coalition and the City of Austin Safe Routes to School program are encouraging students around Austin to walk to school.

The push is to educate both students and parents on how walking or biking to school can benefit the community.

Rhonda Bolick with Safe Routes to School, says the program will teach students how to keep themselves safe when walking to school. "Children should walk with an adult if they are under 10 years old and with a group of friends if 10 and older...cross streets at corners, crosswalks and traffic lights. Don't Jaywalk!" said Bolick.

The international walk is also about driving safety. "Always take time to look in all directions for cars before crossing the street.
When driving, be aware of school zone speed limits. Watch for crossing guards and kids crossing." Bolick said.

The programs will be teaming up Summitt Elementary School for this years event.
