It’s been one year since Hamas launched a surprise attack into Israel, killing more than 1,000 Israelis and sparking a year-long war that has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians and widened conflicts in the Middle East.

The FBI has warned of potential violence on the grim anniversary of the attacks, citing "further significant escalations" that could fuel violent extremists.

Security forces in several countries warned of heightened levels of alert in major cities on Monday, amid concerns that the escalating conflict in the Middle East could inspire new terror attacks in Europe or that some of the protests could turn violent.

Massive rallies and protests were held around the world over the weekend, with thousands participating in both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrations. Other events calling for an immediate ceasefire are expected Monday.

Pope Francis on Sunday repeated his plea for "an immediate ceasefire on every front," including Lebanon. French President Emmanuel Macron has also called for an immediate cease-fire in both Gaza and Lebanon.

"The priority is … that we stop delivering weapons to fight in Gaza," Macron said, drawing criticism from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Jewish community on alert ahead of Oct. 7th anniversary

Rabbi Yanky Baron, Director, Chabad of Ellicott City, joined LiveNOW from FOX ahead of the October 7th anniversary to share his perspective on the latest developments.Rabbi Baron said, "My brother was in Israel [when Hamas attacked] it was really scary. Chabad has security measures in place. Our people must know we will not take any hate."

On Oct. 7 last year, Hamas launched a surprise attack into Israel, killing 1,200 Israelis, taking 250 people hostage and setting off a war with Israel that has shattered much of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed since then in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between fighters and civilians. It says more than half were women and children.

In late September, Israel shifted some of its focus to Hezbollah, which holds much of the power in parts of southern Lebanon and some other areas of the country, attacking the militants with exploding pagers, airstrikes and, eventually, incursions into Lebanon.
