KILLEEN, Texas - The Killeen Police Department has released an update in the fatal shooting of a five-year-old boy.
Through a preliminary investigation, detectives with KPD determined that the child obtained a loaded firearm in the home and caused his own death accidentally.
Officers had been dispatched to the 4500 block of Alan Kent Drive around 11:22 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive five-year-old.
The young boy had a gunshot wound to the head.
EMS arrived shortly after the initial officers and all first responders attempted life-saving measures on the child, according to police.
The child was pronounced dead at 12:03 p.m. on April 21.
Autopsy results are pending and detectives are continuing their investigation. KPD says additional information will be released as it becomes available.
