Kyle man charged with DWI

A Kyle man has been charged with DWI after a crash Wednesday that ultimately led to a train crashing into downed power lines.

The Brief

    • Miller was apprehended on scene and booked into the Hays County Jail. He has since posted bond.

KYLE, Texas - A Kyle man has been charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash that ultimately led to a train wreck.

Just before 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 8, the Kyle Police Department says 25-year-old Anthony Miller's vehicle struck a telephone pole in the 100 block of Center Street, near N. Front Street. 

The crash caused power lines to fall from the pole, which then were struck by a second vehicle which was flipped by the crash.

"This is unlike anything that we've seen in Kyle, but it definitely serves as a reminder of the potential dangers and tragedies that can come from drinking and driving," said Ashlee Bradshaw, a Kyle PD spokesperson.

Kyle police have released a video of a train wreck caused by downed power lines. A man has been arrested for DWI in connection with the wreck.

"I want to say that it was all under a four-minute time span," Bradshaw added.

Minutes later, an oncoming train crashed into the low-hanging power lines, which severed both the lines and railroad barrier arm. Officers responded and apprehended Miller on scene. 

"It's pretty mind-blowing," said Dylan Dever, a Kyle resident. "It's never happened here in Kyle before." 

"Thankfully, our officers were already proactively patrolling the area," said Bradshaw. "As you saw from the video footage, they were there very quickly."

Miller was booked into the Hays County Jail where he has since posted bond and been released, according to jail records.

No serious injuries were reported, but power and communication services were disrupted, leaving homes without electricity for about six hours on a night with temperatures near freezing. 

"Especially right now, maybe last week it wouldn't be too bad, but it sucks that it happened this week, and they're out of power," said Dever.

Power has been restored to customers, and Union Pacific is expected to complete its repairs by Friday.
