Kyle Public Safety Center officially opens

The new 64,000-square-foot, two-story center was approved by Kyle residents in November 2020 through Proposition A.

A 64,000 square-foot state-of-the-art public safety center, housing multiple departments, opened in the City of Kyle. The police department is now fully operational in the public safety center.

"We have had a couple different stations over the last couple of years, meaning, our dispatch is located in one location, animal control and traffic and other divisions were in a separate building a couple of blocks from the main headquarters, and then we had obviously the main headquarters this brings us all under one roof," said Kyle Police Department Chief Jeff Barnett.

The two-story building came with a price tag of $37 million.

"This was almost pushing close to $30-40 million. This was through a bond package that was passed in November 2020. Proposition A, and it was a bond package that was given to the voters which they voted on," says Michael Tobias, the Mayor Pro Tem of Kyle.

City of Kyle votes to invest in police department, not defund it

The new justice center will provide more space for investigations, victims’ services as well as an emergency operations center.

"One of the biggest things for us is this building is built from the love and support of our community. They did so several years ago, when citizens across the country were trying to get a good feel for how they feel about law enforcement in the community. Their police departments at a time when others were struggling for that bright path forward our community showed support by passing a bond," said Chief Barnett.

Hundreds of residents witnessed the ribbon cutting held Thursday night.

"We are very excited for that, and we appreciate the voters of Kyle for bringing this forward," said Tobias.

According to Chief Barnett, this is a major step forward for the city and progress from the small bank building the department is moving out of.

"This space offers us the opportunity to collaborate more with the community. We have training space, meeting space, special report places where people can come in and talk to us in private and talk to us about their law enforcement concerns," said Chief Barnett.

City residents needing to speak to police in person, file a report or complaint will now need to do so at the Public Safety Center. Residents can also call 512-268-3232 for all non-emergency needs.
