David Letterman to headline Biden fundraiser on July 29

David Letterman is set to join President Joe Biden for a high-profile fundraiser in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on July 29. Hawaii Governor Josh Green confirmed the news to The Associated Press on Friday.

The event aims to bolster Biden’s campaign amid ongoing calls for him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Fundraiser details and guest appearances

The fundraiser will take place at the home of a family friend of Gov. Green. It will feature not only Letterman, the former host of CBS' "Late Show," but also President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

This event is one of at least 10 fundraising events planned for the final 10 days of July.

Celebrity reactions and political pressures

Despite support from celebrities like George Clooney, director Rob Reiner, and author Stephen King, some have urged Biden to step aside following a challenging debate performance on June 27. Concerns have also been raised about the ongoing fundraising support due to donor anxiety over Biden’s candidacy and the future of the Democratic Party.

Biden’s response to calls for withdrawal

President Biden remains steadfast in his decision to continue his campaign. Recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Rehoboth Beach, he called for party unity and redirected focus to Donald Trump’s agenda. Biden emphasized his commitment to defending democracy, protecting rights and freedoms, and creating opportunities for all Americans.

"The stakes are high, and the choice is clear," Biden said. "Together, we will win."

Why is Gov. Josh Green supporting Biden?

Gov. Green’s support for Biden is rooted in a long-standing relationship with the Biden family. Initially, reports indicated the fundraiser would be at Green’s home, but he later clarified it would be at a family friend’s residence. Green has known the Biden family for years, with his wife’s uncle being Biden’s college roommate.

"We support the President, the V.P., and the Democratic Party in good and tough times because he has been there for us as a family and a state," Green stated.

What has Governor Green accomplished in Hawaii?

Josh Green has been the governor of Hawaii since 2022, overseeing the state through significant challenges, including last summer’s devastating wildfires. His backing of Biden amidst rising doubts from other lawmakers showcases a commitment to the current administration and its vision for the future.
