Liberty Hill residents concerned about SH 29 speed limit near high school
LIBERTY HILL, Texas - Liberty Hill residents are raising concerns about State Highway 29 after seeing multiple crashes near the high school.
The busy stretch of road connects to I-35 and residents in the area say they are concerned about how fast drivers are going near a residential area and Liberty Hill High School.
What We Know: State Highway 29 connects Georgetown and Liberty Hill, running right past Liberty Hill High School.
The speed limit drops from 65 to 55 near the school, but residents say that is still too fast.
Residents have created a petition for a school zone to be implemented in the area.
The Backstory: Earlier this month, Texas DPS confirmed one person died on the highway near Liberty Hill High.
A Nissan, traveling west, veered into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on. The driver of the Nissan, 48-year-old Jennifer Green of Leander, died on the scene.
Since that crash, flashing lights and speed trailers that remind drivers of the speed limit and their current speec have been put up along SH 29.
FOX 7 previously reached out to TxDOT on the issue. Officials there say traffic studies are underway in the area.
They are also studying if the stretch of SH 29 by Liberty Hill High School meets the criteria for a school zone.
What They're Saying: Jennifer Cooper, a mother of a Liberty Hill High School student, says her family has been involved in multiple incidents on SH 29.
"In the past year, actually nine months, we've had over $200,000 in damage on 29. In March, I had an accident on 29, and that was not my fault," she said. "I had surgeries and I'll never be able never be the same from that. Then just a month ago my son, he's been driving since August, he had a fender bender. Somebody's rear-ended him on 29."
"I feel like long term it needs to be the speed limit change. The locals are going to be aware that more law enforcement is around, but those people who are are driving the 18-wheelers, they're not from here."
