Man in custody after crash at Capitol

A man has been arrested after he drove away from a traffic stop and eventually crashed through the Capitol fence off San Jacinto and hit an oak tree.

Austin police say it all began when they were conducting a traffic stop on 6th Street at about 3:30 a.m. and the suspect drove away.

DPS caught up with the man at 12th and Brazos before he drove off again. The suspect ended up crashing through the Capitol fence and hit an oak tree.

The suspect took off on foot and APD and DPS, with the help of APD canine units, tracked him down off Navasota and 14th after about 90 minutes.

The man is in custody and was taken to the hospital.  He has been charged with evading arrest but other charges are expected.

A female passenger in the car was also taken to the hospital but has since been discharged. She is not expected to face any charges.
